Heart of Bilingual Learning in One’s 1st-Grade Classroom
.
At San Juan del Sur Day School, we are fortunate to have teachers who truly make a difference in their students' lives. One of these dedicated educators is Onelia Obregon, a bilingual teacher originally from Managua, Nicaragua. We know her as Teacher One (pronounced O-NE). With a love for the beach, creative arts, and the science of reading, Onelia brings a unique energy and passion to her first-grade classroom.
One’s journey as a teacher began in early childhood education, where she developed a strong foundation in nurturing young minds. Now, as a first-grade teacher, she continues to build on this experience, creating a warm and welcoming environment where students are encouraged to explore both language and creativity.
Her classroom is a place where learning comes alive. One’s love for cultural studies and natural world often influences her lessons, bringing a sense of place and connection to her teaching. Whether she’s using the ocean as inspiration for a creative writing project or incorporating ecology themes into emergent art activities, Onelia ensures that her students feel connected to their surroundings while developing their academic skills.
As a bilingual educator, One understands the importance of language in connecting with others. She uses her skills to help students embrace their own cultural heritage while learning to appreciate the diversity around them. One’s. approach to teaching reading is both practical and engaging, using techniques that make learning to read an enjoyable and rewarding experience for every child.
In One’s classroom, every day is a new opportunity to learn and grow. She brings creativity, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to her students, making sure each child feels supported and inspired. Onelia’s impact on her students is clear they leave her classroom not only more confident in their language abilities but also more connected to the community and world around them.
We are proud to have Onelia Obregon as part of our teaching team at San Juan del Sur Day School. Her dedication to her students and her love for teaching make her an invaluable asset to our school community.
