Middle and High School Social Studies Teacher - Begin Immediately
Position Overview: San Juan del Sur Day School is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Middle and High School Social Studies Teacher. This position is vital in fostering a deep understanding of history, geography, civics, and global perspectives, aligning with the school’s mission to cultivate inquisitive, self-reliant, and ethically minded learners. The ideal candidate will inspire students to think critically, engage with current events, and understand their role as global citizens in a rapidly changing world.
Key Responsibilities:
Social Studies Instruction: Design and deliver engaging, inquiry-based lessons for middle and high school students that cover history, geography, civics, economics, and global issues.
Critical Thinking Development: Foster critical thinking skills by encouraging students to analyze, debate, and discuss historical events and current global challenges, with a focus on cultivating responsible and informed citizens.
Cross-Curricular Integration: Collaborate with colleagues to create interdisciplinary projects and initiatives that tie social studies content to other areas of learning, particularly within the framework of our school’s mission and the Thrive Regenerative Learning Goals.
Student Engagement: Inspire students to connect their learning to the real world through project-based learning, simulations, and debates, promoting active learning and engagement.
Community and Global Awareness: Lead students in exploring local, national, and global issues, helping them understand their role in a diverse, interconnected world, and encourage community participation in relevant social initiatives.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Education, History, Geography, or a related field.
Teaching experience with middle and high school students, with a proven ability to engage students in social studies topics.
Strong knowledge of current events, global issues, and historical contexts, with the ability to apply these to classroom instruction.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a passion for fostering a dynamic and interactive learning environment.
Preferred:
Experience with project-based learning and inquiry-based teaching methods.
Ability to integrate technology and media into the social studies curriculum.
Interest in leading extracurricular activities related to social studies, such as debate clubs, model UN, or community outreach initiatives.
This role is crucial in helping students develop a nuanced understanding of the world, equipping them with the tools to become engaged, thoughtful citizens.
